How to Process Scrap Wastage for Serial Number Products in Odoo Inventory
Managing scrap wastage for products tracked by serial numbers requires careful attention, and Odoo Inventory provides a structured approach to handle this accurately. By following the steps below, you can ensure that your stock records stay precise and reflect the actual quantities in your warehouse.
Enabling Tracking for Products in Odoo Inventory
Before starting a scrap wastage process, it is essential to configure the product to use Tracking by Unique Serial Number. This ensures that each item is managed individually rather than in bulk. To enable this, open the Product Master, go to the Traceability section, and select By Unique Serial Number under Tracking.
Once this tracking is activated, Odoo will prompt you to select a lot or serial number every time the product is moved, received, or adjusted. This setup improves traceability, prevents duplication of serial numbers, and ensures more accurate stock management.
Creating a New Scrap Wastage Document
To create a scrap wastage record, click + New in the Scrap Wastage menu. Select the Source Location where the stock is stored and choose the relevant Product Category from the dropdown. After entering these details, click Save, and Odoo will automatically generate a unique Scrap Wastage Document Number.
If you attempt to validate the document without adding any products, Odoo will show a validation message: “No scrap lines with products found. Please add products to validate.”
This indicates that at least one product must be included before proceeding.
Selecting Products and Serial Numbers
Products can be added to the scrap wastage document by typing the product code, entering the product name, or scanning the lot/serial barcode. Since the product is tracked by unique serial numbers, selecting the correct serial number for each item is mandatory.
Once a serial number is selected, Odoo automatically displays key details, including the Lot Barcode and GRN Date. The Lot Barcode appears only if the serial number has an assigned barcode, while the GRN Date shows when the specific serial was received into stock.
You can add multiple products in a single document and even include the same product multiple times, as long as each entry uses a different serial number. However, if the same product with the same serial number is added more than once, Odoo will display a validation message: “[Product Code + Product Name] Insufficient Quantity To Scrap”, indicating that the serial number cannot be used again because its available quantity has already been recorded.
Quantity Adjustment and Cost Calculation
After selecting a serial number, enter the Adjusted Quantity. For serial-tracked products, this must always be 1. Entering a value greater than 1 will trigger the validation message: “[Product Code + Product Name] Insufficient Quantity To Scrap.”
Odoo automatically displays the Average Cost for the selected serial number. The Total Value of the scrap wastage is calculated by multiplying the Adjusted Quantity by the product’s cost, ensuring accurate inventory valuation whenever quantities change.
Validating the Scrap Wastage
Once all products and quantities are reviewed, click Validate. After validation, Odoo updates the on-hand quantity, total value, and average cost for each affected serial number. This ensures your inventory remains accurate and fully aligned with the actual physical stock in your warehouse.
