How To Setup Category master in QSR POS?

A Category Master in a Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) Point of Sale (POS) system is the central database configuration that organizes all menu items into distinct, logical groups (such as Category, Sub-category, Product) to streamline order taking, inventory tracking, and reporting.

It acts as the backbone of your digital menu, dictating how items behave on the kitchen display systems (KDS), online ordering apps, and cashier screens.

Core Functions of a Category Master

  • Menu Organization: Groups individual items into logical sections.
  • Tax Configuration: Assigns specific tax structures or GST slabs to an entire group of items at once.
  • Kitchen Routing: Determines which kitchen display screen (KDS) or printer receives the order.
  • Discount Control: Enables or disables promotions, coupons, and discounts for a specific group of items.

Business rules

  • Go to “category master” screen under “master module” and click in “add category” to create a new category.
  • In “Item master” in category field, Click “+” to create new item category.
  • Once add category screen is opened, enter category name in category name field.
  • Then, Select the status as “active” and click “save” to save the category.
  • Only active categories should be listed in item master screen to select the items.
  • Use “view” and “edit” key to view and edit the created categories.
  • Created categories should not be deleted
  • User can inactivate the categories using the status fields.

Typical Architecture Hierarchy

In a QSR POS, the Category Master usually sits in a multi-level hierarchy to keep operations clean:

  1. Parent Category (or Super Category)
  2. Category
  3. Sub-Category (Optional)
  4. Item Master (SKUs)
