Running effective promotions is key to boosting sales and encouraging customers to explore more products. In Odoo Point of Sale (POS), the Category-Wise Promotion feature helps businesses automatically apply discounts to all products within a specific category, making promotions easier to manage and more consistent across similar items.
Apply a Category-Wise promotion in Odoo POS
To apply a Category-Wise promotion in Odoo POS, the first step is to add the eligible products to the POS cart. To do this, you can easily search for products by entering the product code, barcode, or EAN code in the POS search bar. Once you add the products from the designated category, the promotion will automatically be applied.
The promotion will show up as a discount line in the cart, reducing the total price of those items. If you increase the quantity of a product, the promotion will automatically adjust the discount accordingly to reflect the updated total amount.
For example, if you create a 10% discount for the LIFE STYLE / FASHION JEWELLERY / COSMETICS category, every eligible product within that category will automatically receive the discount when added to the POS cart.

How the values are calculated after Promotion
Odoo POS calculates category wise promotions using a transparent and structured method. The total items value represents the number of unique product types in the cart, while the total quantity includes only purchased products. Both fields not includes the Discount product.
The net value reflects the taxable amount for the purchased products after discount. Taxes are calculated based on this net value, and the final total displayed to the customer includes both the applied taxes and the category wise discount.
Promotion Line Validation in POS
If you attempt to manually change the quantity, price, or line discount of the promotion in the cart, the system will display an error message. The error message will state: “Promotion lines do not change price, quantity and line discount.”
This rule prevents any manual adjustments to the promotion, ensuring that the discount applied to the product category remains consistent and avoids errors or discrepancies during the transaction process.

Promotion Details on the Bill Receipt
Completing the sale after the category wise promotion is straightforward. The cashier selects the customer linked to the POS order, reviews the cart items along with the applied promotion, selects the preferred payment method, and then validates the order.
After finalizing the transaction, the printed receipt displays all product details including quantity, MRP, rate, tax, and totals. The discount product appears as a negative line, clearly showing the deduction applied through the category wise promotion.
