How Activity (ABC) Works in iDempiere
The Activity (ABC) in iDempiere is used to define and maintain activities for Activity Based Costing (ABC). This window lets you set up the various business activities for which costs will be captured and analyzed in accounting and costing reports.
Create a New Activity Record
In iDempiere’s Activity (ABC) window, create new activity records by entering a Name, optional Description, Active status, and organizational context—establishing reference cost activities used across financial postings for accurate cost allocation and tracking.

Use Activity as an Accounting Dimension
Once activities are defined in iDempiere, activate them as dimensions in the Accounting Schema, making them trackable alongside Product, Project, or Location in accounting entries—allowing invoices, material issues, and labor transactions to tag costs with meaningful activity codes for precise cost allocation and analysis.

Cost Capture & Reporting
With activity codes captured:
- iDempiere’s costing engine can accumulate costs not just by account or product, but by activity.
- Cost reports (such as product cost detail or activity cost analysis) can show how much each defined activity contributed to total costs.
This enables Activity Based Costing analysis to understand which activities truly consume costs and how to optimize them.
iDempiere’s Activity (ABC) maintains business activity definitions as an accounting dimension for Activity Based Costing (ABC), enabling cost capture by activity and deeper analysis—revealing what drives costs (not just where they occur) for actionable performance insights beyond traditional reporting.
