How Does Work Chat Type Window In iDempiere
The Chat Type window in iDempiere defines categories of chats used to organize discussions around business processes. It links chat conversations to specific ERP documents or business tables, such as Sales Orders, and controls how messages are moderated before becoming visible.
This window is used across standard business processes wherever collaborative, in-context discussion on a business record is required, and applies broadly to Retail, Distribution, Manufacturing, and Services organizations running iDempiere.
Process Flow

Business Rules
- A Chat Type organizes chat discussions by business process or document type.
- The Name field is mandatory and identifies the Chat Type within the Tenant.
- Linking a Table restricts the Chat Type to chats created against records of that business table.
- Moderation Type controls whether chat entries require approval before becoming visible to other users.
- Only active Chat Type records are available for selection when creating a new Chat entry.
- The Organization field determines the scope of Chat Type availability within the Tenant.
Prerequisites
- An active Tenant and Organization must be configured in iDempiere.
- The target business Table, such as C_Order, must already exist in the Application Dictionary if the Chat Type is linked to a table.
- Users must have access to the Chat feature to create and view chats of this type.
Navigation
Menu → Chat → Chat Type
Upon opening the window, users see the Chat Type header form where a new chat category can be defined or an existing one reviewed.
Configuration Steps
Step 1: Define the Chat Type
This step establishes the basic identity of the Chat Type so it can be recognized and selected when users start a new chat.
Navigate to the Chat Type window, enter a unique Name, provide a Description, and confirm the record is Active.

| Field | Sample Value | Description |
| Tenant | POTS | Identifies the tenant the Chat Type belongs to. |
| Organization | * | Determines the scope of Chat Type availability within the Tenant. |
| Name | UPDATES | Unique name identifying the Chat Type. |
| Description | Order status updates | Short explanation of the Chat Type’s purpose. |
| Active | Checked | Indicates the record is available for use when creating a new Chat. |
Step 2: Link the Chat Type to a Business Table and Configure Moderation
Linking a Table restricts the Chat Type to discussions raised against records of that business object, keeping conversations relevant to the correct document type. Moderation settings then determine whether chat messages of this type require approval before other users can see them.
Select the business Table this Chat Type applies to, such as C_Order for Sales Order discussions, and set the Moderation Type to control whether messages are published immediately or held for review.

| Field | Sample Value | Description |
| Table | C_Order | Business table this Chat Type is associated with, e.g. Sales Order. |
| Moderation Type | Not Moderated | Controls whether chat entries require approval before becoming visible. |
When a Table is set, the Chat Type is only offered when starting a chat from a record of that business table. After completing the configuration, the Chat Type is ready for use in standard iDempiere chat transactions.
Common Issues and Resolutions
| Issue | Cause | Resolution |
| Chat Type not visible when starting a new chat | Active checkbox unchecked | Activate the Chat Type record. |
| Chat Type not offered from a specific record | Table field left blank or set to a different table | Select the correct business Table for the Chat Type. |
| Chat messages not appearing to other users | Moderation Type set to a moderated setting and message pending approval | Approve the pending message, or review the Moderation Type setting. |
| Users confused by similarly named Chat Types | Multiple Chat Types created with overlapping names | Use clear, unique naming conventions for each Chat Type. |
| Chat Type missing from another Organization | Organization scope does not match the user’s assigned access | Verify the Organization on the Chat Type matches the user’s Organization access. |
